Artist Statement
As an artist, my project-centered practice is curious, critical, and joyful. I often use playful materials like piñatas and ice cream because they can be openings to difficult conversations about where we have been and where we are going. I also use found objects, photographs, and soil for what they have witnessed. My hope is that in my work people can find something familiar, a point of connection, just as I seek connection in the world around me. I am also a founding member of the People’s Kitchen Collective (PKC) bringing together art, food, and justice. PKC centers our experiences as people of color. We bridge histories of resistance with urgent issues facing us today. My independent and collective practices are both accountable to many communities. We create work with and for youth and elders, grassroots organizations, activists, neighbors, and students, inviting a wide range of creative practices to the table.
