Artist Statement
Artists and Allies is an alliance of artists and activists to respond to the health disparities experienced by residents and healthcare workers in Detroit, Michigan. With over 14,416 COVID cases and 1528 deaths in Detroit, as of September 29, we're attentive to the fact that this acutely high rate of mortality is a result of long-term systematic racism impacting residents' access to safe and adequate housing, food, water, and medical care. We (Halima Cassells, Rebekah Modrak, Jane Prophet, and Silvia Lindtner), the core group of Artists and Allies, partner with local and international teammates to source masks, shields, and gowns, and to distribute PPE to Detroit healthcare workers. We work in solidarity with Detroit fiber artists Stephanie Dickey and Sheila M. Palmer who sew masks for frontline workers. We provide protection for food and water distribution center workers such as Brightmoor Connections and support bottom-up BIPOC Detroiters organizing for social justice.
