Artist Statement
My body of work consistently focuses on altered perceptions of place, culture, and identity built on the assimilation and homogenization of indigenous peoples. The core foundation of my work re-examines varied documentations of Native Americans through the historic process of printmaking. The time I have spent working with these concepts of altered perceptions of place, culture, and identity have also led me to work with mediums such as found objects, ceramics, small metals, painting, installations, video, and sound. Many of these pieces like my installation And They Build It On The Sacred have led me to inspect the commodification of the Native American image and culture by the outside commercial machine. As my work continues I use it as a vehicle to challenge new perceptions of Native Americans by using the western tools that were directed to dismantle it.
