Artist Statement
I am a Korean American artist who uses clay and other materials to mimic, articulate and interpret emotional and psychological spaces. Using the history of emotions as one of my research components, I weave narratives into my sculptures and installations to emphasize textural accumulations of memory and the fragility of mortality. My most recent show, Sizzling Gouba and Long Beach at Martos Gallery was partly based on the early loss of my father and our growing suburban yard which became a public barometer of inner lost control and grief due to its unruliness. Recording movements into clay, I bring my own experiences of identity and existence while manipulating visually what is normally expected of the material.
