David Kagan

My work concerns autobiography, humor, and popular cultural modes. Through Art Matters, I traveled to Ghana to collaborate with music students at the University at Lagos, crafting what I conceived of as an African pop album. A faux-documentary was shot throughout the process blurring fact from fiction. My duel intent was to share a collaborative experience with the young Ghanaians and to engage with the often problematic relationship of privileged artists visiting the third world for inspiration, authenticity, and cheap labor.
